Celebrating women at Bollywood Cafe in Long Street

Image
Levona and I had just spent a wonderful evening at Bollywood Cafe in Long Street. It was all about celebrating women, although the food at Bollywood Cafe was a strong competitor. We attended a Women's Empowerment Circle that is being established by Michele, a friend whom I had met at Christiaan Barnard Hospital. Sharing our communal meal The event was colorful and vibrant from the decor right through to the dress code and the Indian cuisine. The restaurant menu is diverse and the dishes are extremely well-priced. The curry thali dishes are divine. Levona ordered the vegetarian curry while I chose the lamb curry thali. The thali is a meal that is made up of a selection of different delicacies. The food is served on a platter which has a few compartments and small  bowls line the borders of this platter tray.  The curries, chutney, vegetables and sauces are placed in these small bowls while the rice and a pappadam form the centerpiece. Sauls Family Reunion celebration on Heritage Day

Image
Finally, we pulled off our Sauls Family reunion on Heritage Day this year. There we were , the Sauls descendants of Maamie and Paapie Sauls, aka Hendrina and Andrew ( or is it Andries) Sauls. Our only surviving aunt, Aunty Henna, was our guest of honour. Aunty Henna kept the tradition alive by opening our event with a prayer, a bible reading and the singing of a chorus. Then Hilary led the war cry. Give us an "S", she bellowed and we followed enthusiastically. When we had completed our war cry, the hall was on fire. We are the Sauls Family! Sauls Family Branch Members with the vegetables symbolising our rich heritage Blast from the past We had an awesome time together and the young ones thoroughly enjoyed the information about their great, great grandfather and grandmother. We hear that Paapie had 5 children from his first marriage and then he married my grandmother, Hendrina Alexander and they had 7 children. My dad, Peter, was the youngest and he was know...

Catwalking from Muizenberg to Kalk Bay Jenny, Sharon, Carol and Naomi at Surfer's Corner Our History You could probably say we are like a Friends Forever Foursome. Carol, Naomi, Jenny and I have been friends since primary school - well, that is in the case of Carol,Jenny and I. I met Naomi when we moved into 10th Avenue, Retreat, when we were finally offered a council-owned property.  So, for the greater part of four decades, we have known one another and as life is, we drifted and set up our own lives. Naomi and I have been inseparable,of course. We had an unwritten pact to see each other at least twice in a year. On such dates we would spend hours talking through the night, consuming tons of cigarettes and at least a bottle of red wine.  Legs-ercise - Warming up for the walk However, last year we decided to have a reunion with the other muskateers and that is how the four of us have rejuvenated our circle of friendship . This is the best decision we have made be...

Beach walking is random community building

Image
Naomi and I with Strand mountains as our backdrop Today was a “chill” day as my daughter, Sasha, would say. You can just do random things in teenage-speak. No planning, no deep thinking about anything in particular – go with the flow.   My random chill day culminated in a walk along Sunrise beach, Muizenberg with my best friend, Naomi. We trudged along the shore, filling in the spaces with Naomi’s new relationship with V and other niknaks. There is the spontaneity of seashores and playful waves that is infectious. You seldom encounter a surly beach walker. Even our four-legged friends will display random affection to strangers and strike up a conversation. Today Billy, the golden brown Jack Russel, with his rainbow tennis-sized ball, initiated conversation with us. Naomi and I were perched on the rocks where the Zeekoevlei River flows into the sea, chatting happily when Billy arrived. Billy was having none of this closed, private conversation on open public seashores. ...
