Bush camping at Rivierzicht Resort in Robertson

Image
The Rivierzicht bush camps are situated right there on the banks of the Breede River in the Robertson valley.  Imagine waking up to the sound of fish jumping out of the water, reeds rustling in the gentle breeze and birds chirping. Yep, that’s what you get when you stay at one of the bush camps on the Rivierzicht resort. A canoeist paddling on the Breede River The Breede River The Breede River, about 322km long, starts high up in the Ceres mountains, then snakes its way to the Indian ocean at Witsands. Our midweek breakaway at the Caledon Spa in the Overberg.

Image
Basil and I had a fantastic breakaway at the Caledon Spa hotel. It has always been his desire to visit the Caledon Spa as a guest and not as a visitor to the casino. So, luckily for us, the Caledon's Spa Midweek special was on and off we went to the Overberg. The Caledon Hotel, Spa and Casino trio meet the needs of most of local tourists or the stay-vacationers as I believe, we are called nowadays. View from Da Vinci's restaurant.   Before we look at the Caledon Spa delights, let me just say this about midweek breakaways. Midweek breakaways are fantastic because these are the added treats: You get value for money because the same holiday could cost you twice as much. There are fewer people so the the atmosphere is more chilled and you can pretend the place belongs to you! Guests become familiar faces and you will find yourself greeting one another wherever you meet up. You may also meet interesting folk during your time there. Now on to the Caledon ...

Two blessed grandchildren camping with Grandpa Lyndon

Image
Cool trio of Lyndon and his two handsome grandsons.   Just opposite our Kleinmond campsite is a lovely, family: #Linden Bradfield and his two grandsons.   The three campers are organized. Their campsite is a reflection of their smooth camping style. The tent with its minimalist camping necessities cuts a clean picture. The boys are as chilled as their granddad and they use what nature can provide. Yesterday they came back armed with firewood that they picked up along the path.   We are not using our entire site so we have the occasional pedestrians passing through to get to the path that takes you to the lagoon and beach.   On their first walk this morning, I saw the trio looking for the designated path. This footpath that separates our camp from my sister's has been cut off by a parked car. Linden must have told the boys they would have to crisscross through our communal section.   "But didn't you tell us we mustn't disturb the other campers? We must no...

Exploring Route 62 with Montagu Springs Resort as our stopover

Image
If you want a kaleidoscope of treats, you have to explore Route 62. Our family enjoyed our short breakaway to Montagu Springs Resort in Montagu. Whenever we take such trips, we pack in as many activities as we can.   Travelling from Worcester along scenic Route 62 is sheer driving pleasure. You snake through farms with wide expanses of vineyards and breathtaking mountainous landscapes. From Worcester you pass through Robertson which resembles a sleepy town scattered on the hilly landscape. Sprawling vineyards Ashton When you arrive in Ashton, do stop over at the old steam locomotive that is on display in this rural town. We enjoyed clambering on it and took tons of pictures, pretending we were the drivers on the train. Our casual tour guide, one of the town's residents, slightly under the "vine", gave us an impromptu talk. Apparently this steam locomotive (number 2010) was housed at the municipal offices before. It was later moved to the main road to delight both residen...
